Charities are worth it!

Sue Barker recommends an independent first-principles review of NZ's Charities Act and will take your questions.

Trust Democracy is pleased to bring you Charities are worth it!, a Zoom workshop with Sue Barker.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday 22 June 2022, 7.30-9.00pm. Please register at https://charities-are-worth-it.lilregie.com

This is an opportunity to engage with Sue Barker, the 2019 New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellow, about the government’s current review of the Charities Act, and what it would take to get the sort of world-leading charities framework needed in a well-functioning democracy.

While not compulsory homework, we recommend that you prepare for the workshop by reviewing Sue’s recently published report: Focus on purpose – What Does a World-Leading Framework of Charities Law Look Like?

Of her 70-odd recommendations, the most important is that the government’s review of the Charities Act 2005 be transferred to Te Aka Matua o te Ture – the Law Commission for an independent first principles review taking into account the wider legal framework applicable to charities.

You will have the opportunity to ask Sue your own questions.
