Trust Democracy has been supporting an experiment in local democracy – don’t we need some innovation in that space!
At our 2022 AGM, Helmut Modlik, the CEO of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, outlined a vision for the project. Since then, a collaboration between Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Te Reo o Ngā Tāngata: The People Speak has established a Community Leaders Forum. In February and March, a rangatahi wānanga and a citizens assembly will consider the question: how do we [in Porirua] connect and respond as our climate changes?
We’d like to encourage you to support this experiment by attending a film fundraiser at Lighthouse Cuba on Monday 27 January! Funds raised will help meet the costs of a one-day rangatahi wānanga in February that will feed directly into the Porirua Assembly on Climate happening in February and March.
The evening will feature two items: an episode from the 2024 climate documentary series, 1.5 degrees, featuring Pania Rei from Ngāti Toa Rangatira, and the recently released Hīkoi: Speaking Our Truth, which recounts the story of the Foreshore and Seabed protests.
We are delighted that Helmut Modlik has agreed to speak briefly between these features. We wish to send a huge mihi also to the Directors, Amanda Thomas and Whatanui Flavell respectively, for granting us permission to screen their work.
How to buy tickets
- Tickets are $40 each. Kai and light refreshments will be provided.
- Can’t attend but still want to support the kaupapa? Buy a solidarity ticket or make a direct donation!
- Please email your name and number/type of tickets to thepeoplespeakaotearoa@gmail.com and you will provide payment details to secure your tickets.
Please dig deep! We think you’ll agree that both items are hugely topical. Even if you’ve seen them on Māori TV or TVNZ, this is an important opportunity for Wellingtonians to koha and come together collectively to support this Porirua mahi.
The doors will open at 5.45pm for a 6pm start, and we’ll finish at 8pm.
